Kanye West – Monster (feat. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver & Nicki Minaj)

Now this is the single I was waiting for.

Sure, “Power” is a great song, but it sounds as if it will sound better in the context of the album. But now, we have “Monster”, a song so oddball that you’d be hard-pressed to find even Lil Wayne reach this far out. Maybe it’s the subject matter of Kanye, Z, and Minaj all referring to themselves literally as monsters (Kanye is a mummy, Minaj is a vampire, etc.), maybe it’s Ross’s appearance for mere seconds, or perhaps it’s the fact that the song is a profound study of self-image and self-importance in a genre that prides itself on the very foundation of selfish intentions, but “Monster” is an absolute beast of a track.

That’s not a shot on hip-hop, but rather an introduction to a polarizing lifestyle that Kanye has struggled with ever since Dropout. Here, he brings back his surrogate father figure and a newcomer to bring the symbolism full circle, with Jay sounding better than he has in years and Minaj dominating her verses; I’m not the biggest Minaj fan, but I’ll be damned if she doesn’t bring a manic energy to the song that the more reserved Jay and West keep to themselves.

Basically, all you need to know is that this track is easily the best thing Kaye’s dropped since Graduation and it’s free. What more do you need?
